Now You See Me: To x For

One of my 2013 favorite movies. The lovely story and special effects were so gripping that I was totally involved by the plot and its twists. I strongly recommend it.

Look at some of the ways we can use FOR or TO:

To:
To for destination – We’re going to Paris.
To – What time is it? – minutes before the hour – It’s a quarter to three.
To – Distance – It’s about 1 km from my house to my English School
To – Comparing – I prefer reading to watching TV.
To – Giving – I gave a book to my cousin.
To Motive or Reason (with verb) – I came here to study English with you.

For:
For – Benefits – Yogurt is good for your health.
For – Periods of time – I have lived in Brasilia for 12 years.
For – Scheduling – I made an appointment for Friday.
For – Agree with or in favor of something – Are you for or against the development of nuclear weapons?
For – Doing something to help someone – Could you carry these bags for me?
For – Motive or Reason (with noun) – Let’s go out for a drink?

To and For:
Motive or Reason

The Untouchables: Prepositions

This classic is full of very interesting scenes to practice grammar. The director, Brian de Palma, is one of my favorite movie makers, because the way he uses the camera provides us, teachers, with plenty of material for our classes. This scene, for example, shows the same apartment several times and there is little language used, so it is a must for beginners. It is always very difficult to find movie scenes for beginners, so this one is precious. I used it to practice house and decoration vocabulary and prepositions as well.

Watch the movie segment for the first time and decide in which room of the apartment the objects below are located. Write the words below next to the object in exercise A.

KITCHEN (K) - BATHROOM (B) - DINING ROOM (D) - CORRIDOR (C)

The Beach: Prepositions in a Relative Clause

Although many people didn't like this movie, I appreciated it. The plot is original and the circumstances the characters have to face can be very intriguing. The setting is beautiful Thailand, so we can always enjoy the landscape and photography. I took advantage of the dialogs in the scene to practice writing relative clauses with prepositions. It made the class much more interesting, since this grammar point is unattractive to most of the students. I hope you like it.

A. Rewrite the clauses below, using who, whom, which, where or that. Pay attention to the position of the preposition. Remember that when a relative pronoun is the object of a preposition, the preposition appears in the beginning of the clause in formal English. In informal English, the preposition usually appears in the end. Write both formal and informal versions of your answers.

Eden Lake: Prepositions and Giving Directions

It is difficult to find segments to practice giving instructions or directions. This snippet, though, is appropriate because the opening scene shows a couple driving to a hotel, so I thought of having this visual input to practice this grammar point. The movie, however, is nothing special. The scene is appropriate for all ages, but the movie itself is scary and for adults only.

I. Watch the segment and choose the correct alternative according to the segment.

1. When they left, they turned left / turned right / went ahead.

2. They went straight ahead / turned left/ turned right on the highway.

3. On a small road, they passed on/ under / in front of a bridge.

4. They drove for a long time on/ in/ through another highway and turned left /right on the exit.

5. At/ Behind/ Near the traffic light, they turned left / right.

6. The Beer, Bed and Breakfast is on their left/right.

7. Another car turned left / right before them and parked in / under / for the space.

8. They couldn't park, so they left and turned left / right .

II. Talk to a partner. Think about 3 different places in your city. Tell him/her how to get from where you are to these places.

III. Describe your neighborhood to your friend. Say where the bakery, grocery store, pet shop, bus stop, restaurant and others are.

EX. The bakery is across from my building.
